How many teaspoons of sugar in french fries?

French fries, oven baked, 1 serving (150g)

Maintained by an independent editor · Data verified 13 September 2026 · How the numbers are made

7.5 teaspoons of sugar

GI 64 · GL 21

The french fries in this dataset are oven baked, not deep fried. Table 1 of the 2016 paper describes them as “French fries baked 15 min”, and the common foods chart lists “French Fries baked” at the same 150g serving. In British English they would usually be called oven chips.

Table 1 prints every input. A 150g serving contains 32g of available carbohydrate, the glycaemic index is 64, and the printed glycaemic load is 21. Multiplied out without rounding, the load is 20.48, which divides to the teaspoon figure printed on both the chart and the table.

Neither source describes the product beyond its cooking time. Oven fries are usually part-fried in oil before freezing, then finished in the oven, and their fat content, thickness and coating differ between brands. Some are dusted with flour or starch to crisp them.

The sugar burden chart lists french fries per 100g, in its column of foods digested down into sugars, at 5.1 teaspoons. Scaled to 150g, that would be 7.7. The difference is recorded on the sources page.

Fries from a deep fryer, with more oil and often a thinner cut, are not described by this row, and neither are potato wedges or hash browns.

Two other potato rows, from different charts and table entries, are on the boiled potato and baked potato pages.
